Simon Eckstal owner of Tone Records was the top guitarist on albums with music giants such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney. He cashed in on his own label and also set out to nurture new talents on his own terms. Now, years later his once thriving business is spiraling into bankruptcy. “We can’t get bands without publicity, and we can’t get publicity without bands,” he laments to his buddy, Davey, a local disc jockey currently promoting the hottest new band Caramel. As Simon complains about his fall in the charts, Davey scans video footage of teens’ boasting Caramel’s rise. After immediately discovering new talent at a local club, Rob rearranges and reproduces their song at Tone’s recording studio and turns it into a hit. Simon is busy plugging Rob as the new Vice President in press releases and Rob wants to show that he deserves the role — he decides to sign them without Simon’s permission.
