When Sarah Cooper, a beautiful woman in her late 50s, buries her husband’s ashes in the woods near their 100-year-old home, she is sorry on two counts: sorry that Nolan had a long, hard death, and sorry that their marriage had died years before. Her 78-year-old mother, Edith, an entomologist about to fly off to Zaire to do fieldwork, advises Sarah to take off her wedding ring, eat and sleep at different times than she is used to, and realize that there will always be a gap in her life that Nolan used to fill. When her oldest friend, Harriet loses her husband Knox in a car accident a short time later, Sarah flies to Texas for the funeral. The elaborate ceremony and the tasteful black dress that Harriet wears, after Sarah’s subdued and very private burial, point up the contrasts that have always prevailed between the two old friends. Harriet gets little comfort from her circle of friends, a group of local gossips fondly known as the Taste Patrol. Back home Sarah begins a business, inspired when an antique wallpaper she had reproduced from a scrap turns out better than she could have hoped. She also quietly begins a relationship with Will Perry, an old friend as well as Nolan’s physician through his long illness. Harriet, on the other hand, founders in a sea of revelations brought on by widowhood: she is not as well set financially as she thought she would be; Knox was having an affair with one of her friends; and the handsome young accountant who pays her unexpected attentions is in fact looking to take advantage of the connections she might offer him. Sarah goes to great effort to help her friend through a difficult time, but when Harriet comes for a visit, they can’t seem to make it work, and the trip ends on a sour note. Tragically, the two old friends reconcile only when Harriet is diagnosed with terminal cancer, and Sarah is left more aware than ever how much it means to her now to have Will in her life.

Two lifelong friends find their friendship severely tested when both of their husbands die within a short time of one another.
