Filmed entirely on location in Peru, “Max is Missing” turns the archeological field trip of 13-year-old Max Blake (Toran Caudell) into a hair-raising adventure taking him from the streets of Lima to the ruins of Machu Picchu, with a streetwise Peruvian boy as his guide. Max is traveling with his archeologist father Robbie (Matthew Sullivan) to see the Inca ruins. Also interested in the precious treasures of the Incas are three treacherous thieves--Becker (Charles Napier), Logan (Ramsay Ross), and Velasco (Rick Dean). While the three are raiding a remote Inca tomb, Logan secretly pockets a tiny gold statue and runs away. Max and his father cross paths with Logan, who is pursued by his former cohorts, on a train to Machu Picchu. In a panic, Logan hands Max a painted Peruvian mask, seconds before he is killed by Becker and Velasco. When the thugs see Max stuff the mask into his backpack, they hire Juanito (Victor Rojas), a Peruvian boy, to steal it. But when Juanito grabs the pack, Max chases him off the train. The mask turns out to be a cheap souvenir, with the irreplaceable gold statue hidden inside. Juanito, who lives by his wits following tourists, is fluent in English and wise to American culture. He is quite ready to switch loyalties and help Max get back to his father, in return for Max’s Nintendo game. Along the way, the boys narrowly escape death as they are swept over river rapids, recaptured by the sneaky Becker, and almost run down by a train. When Becker manages to kidnap Max’s father, it looks like the boys are beaten. But the quick-thinking pair prevails once again. Max frees his dad and recovers the treasure, and Becker meets a deserved fate.
