The poignant story of two young lovers in a small town on the Missouri just before the turn of the century. Martin is a slow-talking, perpetually struggling river boatman, and Margie's parents, well-off and prominent farmers, feel he isn't good enough for their college-educated daughter. The two are pulled apart not only by family objections, but by circumstances, when Martin's career on the river takes him away to St. Louis, and Margie's obligations to her invalid mother and failing father keep her at home. Enter young, headstrong Aimee de Mar, who aggressively inserts herself into Martin's life. She succeeds in seducing Martin, and when he tries to break off the relationship, she informs him she is pregnant. Crushed but obeying his standard of honor, Martin marries her, devastating Margie back at home. When Aimee dies in a riverboat accident a few months later, Martin is left with an infant son. With nowhere else to turn, he writes to Margie, who takes in the child despite her mother's objections. Over the next five years she raises the child and loves it as her own. She reacts with anger and hurt when Martin announces he wants to take the child back to Kansas City. But as Martin reveals his plan to make a home for them all, Margie's longstanding love for Martin rekindles.
