With only three games left for England to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil, disaster strikes. The manager suffers a near-fatal heart attack and oddly enough nobody else seems to want the job. Football’s top brass turn in desperation to Mike Bassett, manager of a minor league club. Bassett is an old school manager who thinks tactics are small white mints and who writes his team on the back of a cigarette packet, leading to the surprise inclusion of both Benson and Hedges in one of his squads. Once in charge, Bassett hits an immediate and enduring losing streak, but England scrape through to the finals, thanks to a fluke result elsewhere. In South America things go from bad to worse-than-imaginable. The results are pathetic, the team captain is arrested and Mike’s star player has a fling with a beautiful woman … who turns out to be a man. The press are baying for Bassett’s blood, the fans despise him, his family is threatening desertion: his fate as the most hated Englishman ever seems sealed. But at his lowest ebb, inspired by the words of Rudyard Kipling, Mike makes an impassioned plea for the country to get behind him. The rousing words work: England score a last minute classic against Argentina, and suddenly the tournament is wide open. England make it all the way to the final, but lose to Brazil – naturally. Bassett, once reviled and now celebrated, is offered an extension to his contract, but opts to stay in South America as manager of Bolivia.

After England's football manager has a heart attack, Mike Bassett is hired as the new manager and promptly announces the team will win the World Cup.
