Dr. Driscoll Rampart, young, handsome, and a little conceited, is sure that his stay on planet Rustia will be very short. His internship on the planet he calls “the armpit of the universe” is a mistake that his well-connected father on Earth will surely be able to fix. But the crudeness, violence, emotions, and mystery of Rustia begin to have an effect on him. The strongest influence--although Driscoll doesn’t see it as positive--is Dr. Akada, a bearlike, frontier doctor in his 50s. While working for the no-nonsense Akada, Driscoll learns to temper his egotism and have compassion for even the poorest of his patients. He also learns something about the planet and its culture and in turn learns something about himself. One half of the planet Rustia receives perpetual daylight--the Lightside--and on the other half, the Darkside, it is always in night. The peaceful Lightsiders live like simple frontiersmen of the old American West. The violent Darksiders wear armor and live in Gothic-style castles. Driscoll arrives just as a peace treaty is to be signed between the two Rustian peoples, until Strake, the most evil of the Darksiders, murders some of the Lightsiders, hoping to rekindle conflict. Driscoll’s chief contact with the people of Rustia is through the clinic. Traveling to the Darkside with Dr. Akada, Driscoll meets Princess Ariel. They fall in love, inconvenient as the Princess is pledged to marry the evil Strake. When Driscoll gets his chance to leave Rustia, he decides to stay, caught up as he now is in the web of Rustian life. Strake’s undoing comes when he is caught trying to poison Ariel’s father, the King of the Darkside. His imprisonment offers a chance for lasting peace on Rustia, and a chance for Driscoll and Princess Ariel to explore their love for one another.
